Bengaluru Water Crisis: BWSSB Bans Usage for Non-Essential Activities
Bengaluru Water Crisis: Bengaluru, Karnataka – In a bid to conserve dwindling water reserves, the Bengaluru Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) has imposed a ban on non-essential water usage. This comes as the city grapples with a water crisis due to rising temperatures and a lack of recent rainfall.
The ban prohibits the use of treated drinking water for activities such as:
- Vehicle washing
- Gardening
- Fountains
- Entertainment purposes
- Non-drinking purposes in malls and cinema halls
- Road construction and cleaning
The BWSSB, citing section 109 of the BWSSB Act 1964, has warned of a ₹5,000 fine for first-time offenders. Repeat offenders will face a steeper penalty of ₹5,000 per day in addition to the initial fine.
With a population exceeding 1.4 crore, ensuring sufficient drinking water supply is paramount. The BWSSB emphasizes the need for water conservation as the city experiences rising temperatures and declining groundwater levels. The board urges residents to use treated drinking water sparingly.
